The Absurdities of Razon’s MCGI: A Critique

MCGI has become a religion plagued by fanaticism, fear-mongering, and psychological tyranny. Its fundamental doctrines have been trampled on to a point that its core beliefs once based on rationality and faith have been neglected and misappropriated in favor of blind, unquestioned obedience towards its current leadership.

Since the transfer of authority from the religious organization’s late leader to its current administrator, the spiritual principles of MCGI have slowly been subverted by its leading figures in place of their personal and economic interests. The church itself had been reduced to a mere instrument in providing for the private interests of its current head leader, Daniel Razon. Gradually, the functionalities and organized aspects of the church had been exploited and integrated into the private businesses and other ventures of its new leader and his associates.

The church’s loyal membership had faced countless abuses and unwilling psychological control. MCGI’s membership is currently being led to believe that Daniel Razon is acting in the will of the Lord which is not at all to be questioned by any, while they are coerced into sustaining the current leaders’ personal ventures — mostly through the means of depraved brainwashing and constant thought programming. The failure of some to follow results in the administration’s great religious fear-mongering with threats of excommunication; which is, in line with the current administration’s reasoning, the equivalent of eternal damnation. The MCGI religious sect has effectively become a cult-of-personality serving the interests of its current Overall Servant, Mr. Daniel Razon and its central administrative branch, the KNP.

This document aims to expound upon the growing amount of criticism on Daniel Razon’s administration of MCGI, the questionable practices that are encouraged by it which is fundamentally contradictory to the religious sect’s core and initial doctrine, the logical incongruencies propelled by the new Bible lessons, and the overall derogatory treatment of

the membership by its higher-ups. It will not be an active effort in rebuking the doctrinal practices and scriptural interpretations of Bro. Eli Soriano/MCGI; I believe that a comprehensive evaluation for Bro. Eli Soriano’s scriptural interpretations must be the duty of more competent acts, while this document will concern the macro-level damages of Razon’s MCGI to the victimized membership. Before approaching the main subject, I, an individual within the sphere of influence of the MCGI sect and thus greatly affected by its recent developments, shall declare my standpoints and intentions with this document:

1. This document does not intend to be strictly academic in nature, but nonetheless avoids a conversational, subjective, or casual tone. With this document, I ultimately aim to critique Daniel Razon’s leadership of the MCGI Christian sect in a straightforward and serious manner with respect to all relevant parties involved in the issues pertaining to his leadership. Excessive citing of evidence shall be omitted but relevant clips, passages, and media shall be included in the appendix.

   
   

2. This document does not purport to be a critique or an attack of Bro. Eli Soriano’s leadership of MCGI/Ang Dating Daan. Minimal to none criticism shall be made towards him in this document. Whilst I understand how important the era of his leadership is given the subject, this literature must strictly focus on the already large scope of Daniel Razon’s works and influence. Nonetheless, all vital and conjunctive information regarding Bro. Eli Soriano’s era shall be mentioned and given light when necessary to the topic. Similarly, the tone of this critique shall be secular and objective as possible.

   
   

3. The scope of the topic that this document will be discussing is large and complicated, needing further investigation, critique, and professional perspective. I wish to state that this document will inevitably be limited in some scopes and will lack in some areas involving further professional critique. From here I would like to recommend the creation of further literature critiquing the leadership of Daniel Razon’s religious sect by individuals qualified or simply capable of expounding upon the topic and providing much valuable insight.

MCGI’s Initial Scriptural Doctrine

MCGI’s previous Overall Servant, Bro. Eli Soriano, is commendable for his religious leadership. His commitment to the credibility of MCGI and its membership can be seen as genuine and largely unconditional. What is particularly praiseworthy of the late Bro. Eli Soriano’s leadership style is that he maintains emphasis on scriptural consistency and practice.

During his long leadership of MCGI, he had always emphasized that he cannot necessarily be deemed ‘special’ nor ‘prophetic’ for interpreting Biblical scripture and preaching its practices. He had rebuked assumptions that he was in any way a divine prophet or a messiah. This is commonly evident in the “balat ng saging” analogy he had often given in regards to the relation of the Preacher and the Scripture that he is preaching:

“Kahit ituring mo na akong balat ng saging — itapon mo ako — basta’t makuha mo ang

pagkaing-aral, iyon ang mahalaga.”

It was fundamental to Bro. Eli Soriano that the value and credibility of Biblical Scripture exists outside the control and influence of the human preacher, because it is, of course, in accordance to Christian rationale, under the domain of the divinity of God.

Scripture (belief systems, morality, metaphysical positions, nature of divinity) and practices (Christian way of living, norms, decision-making) under the interpretation of Bro. Eli Soriano was fully in debt to the Lord, and no living man in modern times is ‘special’ or deserves messiah-treatment for interpreting or preaching it. Man can study God’s scripture outside a messiah complex of a fellow human preacher, and will have the chance to attain salvation as long as he practices it.

This rationale is almost non-existent under Daniel Razon’s leadership.

Daniel Razon’s Authority

When Daniel Razon stepped up as MCGI’s new Overall Servant, questionable amounts of emphasis had started to accumulate in his position as leader.

His title alone already possesses this aspect — “Kuya” Daniel Razon. When has it ever been established that the membership must acknowledge a domineering authority over them like a big brother, a fellow man especially, when it has been initially established that Jesus Christ must only be the “sibling” with authority in the Church?

This domineering authority that shrouds Daniel Razon is even more manifested in his preaching style. There has been a growing dogmatic consensus that he himself is now the sole interpreter of Biblical Scripture for the membership. This belief is not suppressed as it was with Bro. Eli Soriano’s preaching; rather, it is even propagated as seen in the MCGI Teens programs and most especially in the recent adult Worship Services. It is now a well-established ‘fact’ that ‘Kuya’ Daniel Razon takes up the responsibility to “himay” certain Biblical passages, otherwise it would have forever been cryptic and unfathomable to the rest of the religious sect. It is disturbing enough that Kuya Daniel Razon is made out to be a requirement for the Christian faith in the eyes of young children in MCGI’s youth programming, but it is collateral that he is portrayed as an infallible prophet for the adult membership capable of all good and no-wrongdoing.

MCGI’s programming is making Daniel Razon inseparable from the Bible — making him out to be the one true “chosen” teacher that has the sole ability to interpret and teach Christian doctrine to the masses and no one else. If he did not teach it, then it is apparently invalid to the MCGI sect. This is especially ridiculous when the “himay”-ed topics are as simple as being good to one’s own neighbor or the ills of wealth. Why does Kuya Daniel have to build up such straightforward passages as something so cryptic then pose as a cryptographer unfolding some sort of big secret to the membership? It is terribly alarming that Daniel Razon can monopolize the interpretation of the Bible all to himself so that he can impose his own unquestioned viewpoint on the entirety of MCGI.

Another objective of this blatant programming is to portray Daniel Razon as “an ambassador of goodwill.” In showcasing MCGI’s charity efforts during worship service broadcasts Daniel Razon is almost always shown as the orchestrator of these charity efforts – charity efforts which are funded by the membership and orchestrated by local servants.

Further sensationalism is put forward by showing Daniel Razon as a savior and an all-loving figure approached and praised by many; a sight approaching idolatry and personality worship. This portrayal approaches absurdity even further by direct fostering by the MCGI’s KNP officers to fund Daniel Razon’s international travels to first-world countries and make his arrivals as grandiose and impressive as possible completely unfit with the “oppressed and tired prophet” archetype that he in his preaching tries to uphold.

Furthermore, Daniel Razon maintains a position of plausible deniability when his cult of personality comes under scrutiny by questioning members or outside critics by disregarding these comments and making them out as critics of the Christian faith and doubters of his position of church leader as an attempt to appeal to his own authority. All of this whilst directly fostering and fueling his grandiose public image during worship services.

It is even a recurring statement as seen in the Worship Recaps’ segments: “Salamat sa Dios at hinimay po ng ating Kuya Daniel ang turong ito! Ngayon lang ito narinig at napakasarap po talaga nitong paksang ito, Kuya!” Preposterous, when pitted against Bro. Soriano’s rationale. The portrayal of Daniel Razon as an infallible preacher with complete authority over scriptural interpretation is fostering blind obedience within the MCGI sect.

MCGI’s Dichotomous Narrative, and Coercive Conformity

With Daniel Razon’s image now framed as a ‘prophetic’ and enlightened preacher above all else, the essence of the topics discussed in Worship Services have gradually started to change along with it. Discussions pertaining to Biblical passages as it was during Bro. Eli Soriano’s preaching has slowly been subverted and replaced in favor of pushing a dichotomous narrative that favors Daniel Razon and MCGI as an institution.

This narrative is in simple terms black-and-white; it posits two sides that the membership of MCGI must always take in mind — the “side of God” and the side of the lobo/diablo. Daniel Razon and MCGI’s admin state the side of the diablo as something very ambiguous, all that is terrible and parallel to the workings of MCGI; and the “side of God” is whatever he deems righteous in accordance with his “enlightened” interpretation of the scripture.

This narrative is consequently disastrous because it technically gives Daniel Razon and MCGI the complete authority to dictate what is right to the membership, and judge whatever they may deem unruly as demonic and something that must be avoided at all costs.

This manipulative tactic has proven to be very effective with Daniel Razon now possessing the self-imposed right to sway the moral compasses and consciences of the MCGI membership as seen in the long-form Worship Services. MCGI’s charity efforts are now shown as something completely unique to the sect and an unquestionable piece of evidence that MCGI is the “one true church of the end times.” There are even instances where Daniel Razon is openly regarded and sensationalized by the higher ups with the likes of Bro. Jocel and Bro. Rodel as “the most important living preacher of our time” That is simply an outrageous claim, especially considering the repetitive and fallacious nature of his preaching.

The other side of the coin is arguably more detailed and thus devastating – MCGI’s admin has a lot to say about the lobo/demonyo. Members who develop doubts are labeled “iba na ang diwa” or “nasa Satanas na.” Not only does this prevent healthy discussion and constructive criticism with the MCGI admin, but this promotes radical segregation among the membership. Members of MCGI are being encouraged in Worship Services to scrutinize the obedience of fellow members to forcefully enforce maximum conformity to Daniel Razon’s leadership and MCGI’s convoluted new doctrine. This has led to many members being outcasted, suspended, or excommunicated by the common membership for simply having doubts or even mere criticism towards Daniel Razon and the administration. Effectively this coercive way of enforcing conformity within the sect had fostered a strong sense of herd mentality and sheep behavior, which may as well be the point because Daniel Razon presents being a tupa as the ideal way of following him.

“Sigurado ka ba na hindi Satanas ‘yang katabi mo sa pagkakatipon? Kailangan lahat kayo ay tupa sa iglesia, dahil may mga lobo sa inyo.”

These points are what blatantly show Daniel Razon and his MCGI leadership’s extreme brainwashing on the membership. A leader proposed as an unquestionable, messiah-like figure with complete judgment to rule out what the masses must follow is a recipe for tyranny; and the receiving end of control, the common membership, is unfortunately victimized and abused to no end.

However, it does not end here. Aspects of MCGI’s doctrine had not only been modified to enforce obedience but to sensationalize the religious sect — to make it more appealing for non-members to join and unwittingly get involved in a world of discord and psychological torment.

Sensationalized Faith

It is worth considering that the current absolute leader of MCGI, Daniel Razon, is also an entrepreneur and a professional entertainment and news broadcaster. He is one of the most prominent figures in Philippine network broadcasting – owning and operating large portions of the highly influential broadcasting corporation UNTV. Razon is also CEO of the multi-million dollar music radio station entity Wish 107.5, the multimedia Progressive Broadcasting Corporation, the KDR Adventure Camp; and of course, the numerous industries under the MCGI trademark and the KDR Group of Companies.

Notwithstanding these profitable positions, Overall Servant Daniel Razon does not hold any credentials in theology, moral-ethical studies, philosophy, or any academic field common in that of a Biblical preacher. Daniel Razon is an entertainer, speaking on theological topics as if they are entertainment pieces.

Since the passing of Bro. Eli Soriano, the public image of the MCGI sect had undergone numerous changes. The most blatant example of this is the portrayal of the MCGI sect as the only valid Christian organization capable of charity and preaching in the entire world. It is first and foremost obvious in the hour-long, heavily sensationalized AVP recaps that precede actual worship topics. Said AVP recaps primarily feature KNP official Josel “JMal” Mallari recapping Daniel Razon’s sermons in an infantilizing manner towards the members through his ridiculous method of monologuing through an exaggerated personality.

In the preaching side of things, Daniel Razon and MCGI’s KNP officers had worked wonders with MCGI’s recruitment by maximizing broadcasting of Bro. Eli Soriano’s old indoctrination videos and continuously peddling sensational claims of Daniel Razon being the sole authority of God and Christ on Earth by fueling further claims such as but not limited to him being a prophesied prince in the Bible, having spirits of guidance by his side that automatically makes all of his decisions granted by providence, being a successor to Paul the Apostle, being a repository of divine knowledge passed down by Bro. Eli, and other inhuman feats that are ultimately unprovable on an empirical standpoint.

Nonetheless, these efforts towards inflating Daniel Razon’s cult of personality is effective towards members that have either been programmed to believe these or have been coerced to accept them as facts. The fact is that these claims have had disastrous indirect consequences, and have only fostered unquestionable obedience to Daniel Razon’s authority as a figure of divine knowledge and good work in the world.

The charity efforts of the MCGI sect during the leadership of Bro. Eli Soriano abided by the principle that good works and charity directed non-members have intrinsic value by themselves as moral acts, and do not have to be endlessly showcased in broadcasts to be validated in the eyes of the membership and curious outsiders. Come Daniel Razon’s central leadership, this principle would be immediately nullified in favor of blatantly and sensationally broadcasting and dramatizing recorded footage of MCGI members performing mild charity acts. Church discourse would also market to curious non-members the nature of “free resources” available within church membership.

Efforts to entice new members perpetually churn out video features of sensational claims stating that all resources such as healthcare, food, and education are all “free of charge” inside the church; this is simply untrue. Primarily, the “free” enterprises under the church are all limited to specific events hosted in indigenous communities in the Philippines with the subliminal motive to convert isolated indigenous communities. Secondly, these enterprises are not all “free” in the sense that these are free of charge and universally available – these projects are majorly funded not by the pockets of the likes of Daniel Razon but by the aggressive and endless taxation of the common membership. Inside the church, there is a concept called “ubusan” in which the more money you give towards the central membership the more “righteous” you would seem to be as a church member. This would guarantee that the membership body would be an unlimited source of funding for more projects aimed to convert more members.

Ultimate credit for charity efforts that have been funded, organized, and executed by numerous MCGI volunteers and church members have been indirectly claimed by Daniel Razon thanks to the sensationalism of his KNP officers. The portrayal of Daniel Razon as the “ambassador of goodwill” has only enabled him to be credited as the no-wrong-done, beacon of all good deeds enacted by the MCGI membership body. These claims have only gotten more absurd with the constant peddling of the belief that the MCGI sect is the only Christian sect in the world whose works are deemed good and valid by God because apparently the MCGI doctrine is the “correct” way of interpreting the Bible’s instructions. This is in regards to the fostered idea that MCGI is the one-true-church on Earth – a claim peddled to discredit other local Philippine and international churches and enclose current members in a walled garden of the same false ideas peddled over and over again enforcing one idea: MCGI is the one true Christian church. Daniel Razon is the leader of MCGI. Therefore, we as Christians must obey Daniel Razon as the one true preacher.

Razon’s MCGI as a Backend for His Business Endeavours

Any successful businessman known to already be handling numerous businesses ranging from restaurant branches, ranches, broadcasting services, and concert services who will then pursue a career as a Biblical preacher should always be met with skepticism no matter the circumstance. However, it is not as easy as it is in this case when the businessman-preacher in question will resort to any fallacy to shield himself from challenges against his credibility.

It is within reason to believe that MCGI, the religious sector, now serves as a front end for the private business ventures of its authority, Daniel Razon. With the aggressive pursuit for more and more converts to the sect, the membership body has become rich ground for a market to its leader’s businesses. Aspects of Daniel Razon’s corporate affairs have seemingly been integrated with questionable practicality into the religious sect that he is in charge of. It is a matter of debate for the “ethical” implications in which church affairs and corporate affairs (especially by its leader) should be interwoven. Inside the MCGI sect there is an evident interplay within the two and for the sake of its membership’s rights it is worth critiquing.

With the aggressive imposing of more and more monetary contributions from the membership to fund charity campaigns and further efforts to convert new members, the methods in which these monetary contributions are accumulated grow more questionable upon evaluation. One glaring example is the incentivizing of church members to fund Wish107.5 events by ways such as purchasing multiple concert tickets and funding concert expenses. Church locales and gatherings are incentivized by KNP officials to collect as much contributions as they can to contribute to the cause of Wish Date concerts administered by Daniel Razon, its CEO. However distant and unconnected Wish concerts and MCGI church obligations are, the two are mutually managed by Daniel Razon; thus, church officers and good-meaning local servants are pressured by their KNP superiors to continuously bump up monetary contributions from the common member to fund Daniel Razon’s private interests with Wish, being burdened with ridiculous tasks of having church

locales purchase gold standard front-seats of Wish concerts that they won’t even have to

attend.

Furthermore, the funding choices of Daniel Razon’s KDRAC recreation center at Orani, Bataan possess major peculiarities. This section of the document shall briefly discuss prominent questions on the funding of KDRAC construction and operations; nonetheless, closer and more comprehensive investigations must be made to further validate the critique that will be presented in this section, and testimonials and professional insight is surely welcome in clarifying the problematic nature of the situation.

First and foremost, there is much valid speculation regarding the nature of the funding of the construction of Daniel Razon’s KDRAC recreational camp. The property of which its services is conducted in – Orani, Bataan, – had been jointly funded through monetary contributions accumulated after at least two decades by many MCGI members.

This incentive was primarily led by the previous MCGI Overall Servant, Bro. Eli Soriano, with

the intent of purchasing the large plot of land situated in Bataan to benefit the religious sect

as a whole. Bro. Eli Soriano proposed that the purchased plot of land would be owned by the

membership body of MCGI, which would in turn be a general area for religious work and for

the construction of premises that would serve as safe havens in times of coming societal

hardships and “tribulations.” With the passing Bro. Eli Soriano, and the succession of Daniel

Razon as leader of MCGI, the plot of land would be used for drastically different purposes.

Significant progress made with the intention of Bro. Eli’s incentive in mind would later be undone with the demolition of buildings relevant in the aforementioned causes. Property development funded by the MCGI membership would be used to turn the plot of land into a for-profit recreational “adventure camp” under the management of Daniel Razon. Open dialogue with KNP officials would even confirm this, as they would discuss and admit to using MCGI Cares charity funds to fund construction and maintenance of the KDRAC and its services. Most upsettingly, a requested official document from the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission reveals that the spouse of Daniel Razon – Mrs. Arlene Razon – is the central stockholder of 80% of the KDRAC corporation, and acts as the Chief Financial Officer of said company; and other direct relatives and associates of Daniel Razon – his brother Eli John Razon, and KNP officials Donato Capulong and Noli Saballa. It is sincerely concerning that the plot of land purchased and maintained through continuous contributions and voluntary labor by common MCGI members is being utilized for profit through central and concentrated management by a select few private individuals associated with Daniel Razon, the leading figure of the MCGI sect who holds the public trust of good-meaning

MCGI members.

Additionally, capital amounting to millions of pesos from the MCGI Cares monetary contributions supposedly directed towards charity work and churchly causes is being funneled into private donations to the Philippine National Police under the helm of Daniel Razon. Daniel Razon has made multiple public appearances and media features donating notes up to 4 million pesos to the PNP agency, with then-police general Bato dela Rosa – a controversial figure of his own – representing for receipt. For the MCGI members, this donation incentive is not exactly under-the-table, as KNP officials often nudge church locales and local servants to drive up contributions for the MCGI Cares as, according to one instance, “the PNP requests for such.”

Finally, the prominently discussed issue of the Area 52 nightclub in Florianópolis, Brazil is a large debacle of its own. The Daniel Razon-led MCGI sect has been subject to significant criticism for being exposed to having had direct involvement in managing the infamous nightclub. Even now being defunct, the nightclub has clear records of being owned by Daniel Razon’s associates, with clear documented videos surfacing of him and some notable associates. The point of blame for who had ultimately established the nightclub itself is a matter of debate, with characters such as Ulysses Villamin – a controversial defector of the MCGI – being the most probable mastermind in the establishment of the nightclub in 2018. For the sake of objectivity, it is not fair to pin the act of establishing the nightclub directly to Daniel Razon. However, it is still valid to criticize him for outright denying involvement with the nightclub’s operations, even in the face of damning evidence of himself and his associates present in the aforementioned location. It is also greatly disappointing that he would repeatedly resort to indirectly using excuses such as the video being

artificially-generated to dissuade discussion and validation on the video.

There are many other points to be discussed regarding the potentially large-scale misuse of church funds accumulated through the membership’s contributions, including but not merely limited to the apparent usage of locale funds in congregations abroad particularly in congregations situated in Canada and Australia to cover the travelling and accommodation costs of the Razon family when they happen to visit overseas MCGI locales.

However, for the sake of keeping this section as straightforward and non-speculative as possible in dealing with already blatant and consistent truths, further discussion of such instances shall be omitted but is advised to be critiqued and evaluated further by keen members and observers. Notwithstanding the limitations of the current information pointing towards the negligence of accountability by Daniel Razon and his associates, it is imperative still for the long-term preservation of the credibility of the current MCGI administration and for the well-being of the numerous good-meaning members and local servants of the sect that the aforementioned issues be addressed, evaluated, and resolved in a transparent and well-meaning manner.

The Implications of Razon’s MCGI

The current malicious practices to maintain the Razon authority over the central administration and the whole MCGI sect as a whole have a myriad of unpleasant implications from a prospective standpoint. The tendency to uphold Daniel Razon’s image of authority among the general membership through manipulative and hyperbolic means would encourage a totalitarian and unquestionable sense of obedience towards him, thus nullifying the nature of healthy dialogue and genuine respect within the Christian sect. A Christian sect centered around blind obedience and submission to its human leader could border idolatry in juxtaposition to the real nature of Christianity. Furthermore, the Razon-led KNP’s operations of culling doubt and critical assessment of Daniel Razon and his leadership is arguably unhealthy, and could lead to the cognitive dissonance and subsequent leaving of some MCGI members.

Regarding as well the potential disarray within the membership body of MCGI due to the increasingly convoluted reasoning of the Razon administration, segregation among MCGI members who have been convinced to be utterly loyal to Daniel Razon and members who simply wish to bring up questions and resolve doubt is therefore amplified. It is disastrous for the benevolent members of the MCGI sect – from families, to friends, and entire locales – to be divided over the malpractice of authority caused by the failure of Daniel Razon and the KNP themselves to retain credibility without appealing to hyperbolic claims and sensational tirades. The unresolved damages to the MCGI caused by such is simply a disservice to past and previous church leaders, local servants, and the membership as a whole.

The potentially malicious misuse and misplacement of church funds accumulated by good-nature contributions by common members is also a principal issue that must be addressed and resolved comprehensively. It must not be neglected that such monetary contributions and voluntary labor are precious capital, and must be treated with the equal benevolence as the intentions of the common member that had chosen to contribute. It is not free capital for Daniel Razon, his family, nor his associates to be spending for their private interests; it is public church funds from the hands of the common MCGI member who expects his contribution to go wholly towards the matters of the church and its active charity efforts.

Ultimately, it is highly, highly encouraged that Daniel Razon and the KNP resort to more wholesome and healthy ways of conducting management and preserving credibility. The entire MCGI sect from the common members to the high serving church officials expects that the central administration of the church operates under Christian principles and by the laws of the scripture they pledge allegiance to; and that MCGI members themselves must reflect on their values and autonomy so that they may not fall prey to personas and alleged divine preachers that are occupied with nothing else but their pockets and their egos.
